Bedroom Styling Makeover

There’s something about old Queenslander homes that makes you want to slow down, put the kettle on, and relax in a hammock on the deck with a good book. My bedroom, which is nestled inside my 90-year-old home full of creaky floorboard charm and dappled sunlight—has always had good bones, but recently, it was crying out for a bit of love (and more storage).

I bought this house just over a decade ago, and for most of that time, I’ve been sleeping on the same set of sheets — a spontaneous purchase made while I was on a shoot (we have lots of options for work, but for myself I just had the one set!). Somewhere along the way, the room that once felt charming and full of potential started to feel a little... tired. Familiar in a way that wasn’t cosy anymore. It was well and truly time for a freshen-up.

Enter: a bedroom styling makeover that ended up feeling more like a reset.

It all started with a bed. The Noosa Bed in fact, from Sleeping Giant Australia, with a cocoa-hued Belgian linen slipcover (both the bedhead and base, are removable and washable). Underneath? A gas-lift base with room to stash everything from spare doonas to summer clothes. Practicality disguised as design; my favourite kind of styling!

Of course, one new thing snowballs into another, and before I knew it, the whole room was getting a glow-up. A softly textured bouclé rug now warms the floor, while a natural rattan accent chair (also from Sleeping Giant) gives me somewhere to place my work bag when I get home from a day in the studio.

The bedding became my colour palette: Pinot Gingham and Yellow Stripes from Australian brand Carlotta and Gee, which gave the whole space a playful, sun-washed style.

The final touches came courtesy of vintage pieces which pulled everything together with the perfect balance of whimsy and calm: cane and wrought iron bedside tables, layered cushions, and thrift shop lamps that cast just the right low warm glow in the evenings.

This bedroom now feels like it has a whole new lease of life — gentle, nostalgic, creative, and slightly undone in the best way. A little bit country cottage, a little bit modern.

The best part? It feels like me.
